Whither Halloween?

Awww, thanks for the welcome back, my sweets. I feel lurved, and I lurve you all back. And I hope I will find the fortitude to stick around for a while.

I have to say that Halloween was a disappointment. For the first time in many years, I bought candy to give out and turned on my porch light. Had one, count 'em ONE, trick-or-treater. What, have the "OMG! Someone Might Kidnap/Poison/Molest/Permanently Scar My Child!" Safety Police finally won? Or is it just parental apathy? It kinda sucks. Or maybe it's just where I live. Or maybe it's because it's been so cold at night here that the kids all said "Screw this!" and went to the mall instead.

Dammit, that means I have to eat all this candy. I've got good stuff, too! Reese's. Snickers. Milky Ways. Tootsie Rolls. I'm gonna overdose on chocolate. Urp.

Happy Hallowe'en!
The health and safety brigade is even scarier than the little monsters that were out last night!

We had two turn up at Ma's house. We reckon we had more, but the door bell is too high for the little ones to notice, lol.

We had parkin. :P Bakery bought cause mam wasn't well, but still good. I'm definately gonna perfect a recipe and send you some!

Re: Happy Hallowe'en!
Yeah, what is it with overzealously-protective parents? They seem to rejoice in sucking the fun out of their children's lives. :p I suppose trick-or-treating is going the way of Christmas caroling, which was one of my favorite childhood activities... 'Tis a shame.

Parkin! Gimme! I should learn how to make it myself, but I've discovered, much to my dismay, that baking is a dicey thing at my altitude. I'm not an inept baker, but anything that has to be even slightly cakey/bready just doesn't seem to work very well up here. :P Ah well, that one bad thing about living at high altitude is greatly outweighed by all the good things, I guess. A massively efficient cardiovascular system that can run on even when there's only one or two oxygen molecules present is a nice thing to have. *laughs*

Re: Happy Hallowe'en!
I'm at sea level, so I have no excuse for crap baking. I've tried my hand at parkin a few times, but it's a bit sub-standard. I can't get the oats and treacle right. Slowly getting better at it though, whereas if I make brownies a lot they get poorer in quality, so that's a once in a while thing. Fudge was an epic fail. I make a beautiful victoria sponge cake (which it so simple, it's idiot-proof so it's not really an achievement)
